What macroing means in classic-era MapleStory, which classes are built for it, and the tradeoff you're actually accepting.
What "macro" means here
In classic-era MapleStory, macroing refers to leaving your character in one spot, using a repeat-keypress macro (software or a physical macro device) to spam a single attack skill while you're away from the keyboard, usually for slow AFK leveling. It's different from a bot: a macro doesn't move, loot, or make decisions — it just repeats one input against monsters that walk into range.
Why some classes work and others don't
A good macro skill needs to hit without requiring movement or aim: a stationary, wide-hitbox area attack that lands on anything that wanders in. That's why classic macroing is almost synonymous with Magician skills like Poison Mist and Paralyze — they cover a fixed zone in front of the caster with no repositioning needed. Bishop keeps that property into late game and adds Heaven's Hammer, a defense-ignoring attack that doesn't require the precise timing melee combos do.
Warrior, Bowman, and Thief skills generally need either movement, directional aim, or combo timing to hit efficiently, which is exactly what a simple repeat-keypress macro can't provide — so they're rarely the classes people mean when they say "macro class" in this era.
The real tradeoff
Macroing trades active playtime for wall-clock time — you're not training faster per hour of attention, you're training during hours you weren't going to actively play anyway. It doesn't bypass the server's actual EXP curve or mob HP; check the EXP Calculator for what a macro session at your level actually nets you before assuming it's worth setting up.
Before you set one up
Whether AFK macroing is allowed at all is a per-server rules question, not a MapleStory-wide constant — some servers explicitly permit it, others treat any unattended automation as a bannable bot regardless of how simple the input is.
