Classic vs Modern GMS

A 'classic' server isn't just old-looking — the rates, the job kits, and the whole progression loop are structurally different.

Honesty note: this describes what generally distinguishes a classic/legacy-rate MapleStory server from modern live GMS. Since this is a new release, exact feature parity with old-school GMS may differ in specifics — we'll refine this page as real patch notes and player experience come in.

Rates

The defining feature of a classic server is slower EXP and drop rates than the modern game runs at by default. Modern GMS has layered on years of rate boosts, EXP coupons, and catch-up systems — a classic server intentionally strips those back, so leveling and gearing take meaningfully longer per level.

Job kits

Modern MapleStory characters have four or five job advancements, Hyper Skills, and Hexa/link-skill systems layered on top of the base kit. A classic server typically caps progression well before that point, so your skill list is shorter and simpler — closer to how the class played in its earliest patches, before years of power creep and kit reworks.

Gear progression

Modern GMS gear progression runs through systems like Starforce, Potential, and Bonus Stats that didn't exist in early MapleStory. A classic server generally predates those — gear power comes from base stats, scrolls, and slots rather than a layered enhancement economy, which makes the early item market simpler but also means there's less of a long-tail power ceiling to chase at this stage.

Quality-of-life

A long list of conveniences modern players take for granted — faster NPC dialogue, expanded inventory/ storage, streamlined quest tracking, easier map navigation, reduced mystic-door and taxi cooldowns — were added gradually over the years. A classic server tends to run without most of them, which is part of the intended experience but is worth knowing going in if you're used to current GMS.

UI and world state

Expect an older-era interface and map roster rather than the fully modernized UI and expanded world map current GMS ships with. This is a deliberate part of the classic pitch, not a bug — but it does mean guides and muscle memory from modern GMS won't map 1:1 onto this server.
